In 1999, Bai Zhiyong graduated from Lanzhou Railway Technical School and was assigned to China Railway No.1 Bureau and No.5 Company. In order to master the measuring instruments as soon as possible, he has a low education level. Every day after work, he will take the level to the office, use the ground, chairs and tables to form a height difference, measure the height difference with a steel tape, and then use the level to measure it. Again and again, he tried and practiced, and slowly he got a feel and an intuitive understanding of the instrument. Finally, he practiced until he could be accurate and turned his skills into instinct. In 2009, he graduated by correspondence in an environment of scattered mobility and extremely difficult work and life.
Nearly 300 days of surveying work are in the wild in 365 days a year. The Western Han Expressway is the main traffic route from Xi ‘an to Hanzhong. Because there are mountains along the way, the expressway can only meander along the Han River like a snake. In order to finish the survey task on time and make the project start as soon as possible, Bai Zhiyong, who had just finished appendix surgery for less than ten days, rushed to the West Han Expressway to carry out the project retest. He ran back and forth on the river with injuries and accidentally fell into the river! When he returned to the station at night, the wound was infected. He was so painful that he couldn’t sleep all night. He had to temporarily reduce inflammation and bandage it with white wine. The next day, he got up as usual and continued to work.

Over the past ten years, all the surveying and mapping achievements of 50 national key railways, high-speed railways and expressways he is responsible for have passed the one-time acceptance, and all of them have won high-quality engineering awards, which has created great brand effect and social and economic benefits for enterprises.

On the riverbank near the company, colleagues will always find Bai Zhiyong’s figure. Whenever he has time, he will practice measuring, which is called "finding the feeling" in his own words. This feeling is very important in practical operation. China Railway No.1 Bureau & No.5 Company is well-known in the industry for being good at hitting difficult, dangerous, long and large tunnels. During the construction process, the survey team should regularly measure and control the project. However, the light in the tunnel is dim, and the construction procedures such as cast-in-place concrete in the tunnel face and blasting and drilling are also being carried out in an orderly manner. The surveyors should complete the work with high precision and high efficiency under the conditions of limited time and space, and the feel at this time is efficiency.
In addition to the measurement feel in the field, there are also many tricks to calculate the measurement data in the industry. In 2004, Bai Zhiyong participated in the surveying skill competition organized by China Railway No.1 Bureau for the first time. He programmed the Casio 4500 calculator with the knowledge he taught himself at ordinary times, and it took him 32 minutes to complete the calculation that would have taken 60 minutes. This result was unbelievable to the judges and teachers present, and Bai Zhiyong was asked to talk about his new ideas at the summary meeting. This incident also inspired many contestants. After the competition, they often received calls from the contestants at that time and asked him about programming with a calculator. That is, this time, the rookie measurement recruits began to show their abilities.
Since then, from China Railway First Bureau to China Railway Corporation, to Shaanxi Province and then to the whole country, Bai Zhiyong has constantly exercised himself in various levels of skill competitions, and at the same time carefully learned from outstanding peers. In 2010, Rong won the silver prize in the "Final of Engineering Surveyor in the Skills Competition for Employees of Central Enterprises" sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, realizing the transformation from ordinary workers to experts enjoying special allowances from the state government.

Bai Zhiyong is good at transforming learning achievements into productive forces, making many technical improvements and process upgrades with independent innovation and hard study, and constantly solving technical problems by relying on superb and excellent skills. He participated in the research of "Application of Global Positioning System (GPS) in the control survey outside the long tunnel", and used GPS to control and survey the key projects such as Cangling Tunnel of Taiga Expressway, Yun Teng Ridge Tunnel of Zhuyong Expressway, North Tianshan Tunnel of Jingyihuo Railway, Ankang Section of Xiang-Yu Railway, Zhengxi Passenger Dedicated Line and so on. Through the implementation and application of several projects, the cost is greatly reduced, the accuracy is improved and the labor time is saved.
He and his colleagues carried out the research and application of "application technology of shaft directional survey system" in Liuyanghe Tunnel of Wuhan-Guangzhou Passenger Dedicated Line. Through the comparison and selection of shaft directional survey schemes, after repeated tests, the double-throwing-point and double-directional technology, that is, the joint directional method of ordinary gyro theodolite and plumb bob instrument, was successfully used to solve the construction survey problem of high-precision penetration of the main tunnel of No.3 shaft in Liuyanghe Tunnel, which improved the horizontal penetration accuracy and saved more than 400,000 yuan. This achievement has been widely used. In October 2010, this achievement won the third national outstanding technical innovation achievement award. The QC team of the precision survey team of China Railway No.1 Engineering Group Co., Ltd. participated in the project of "improving the survey efficiency of CP ⅲ plane control network" and was named the national excellent management team.
All the year round, Bai Zhiyong constantly studies the accuracy and precision of measuring instruments under the influence of natural factors such as air humidity, sunlight intensity, dust content and wind strength. Through years of experience, he has created his rapid and accurate measurement skills. At the same time, his rich practical experience makes him an expert in solving field problems. In the construction of the North Tianshan Tunnel of Jingyihuo Railway, the data of control survey were inconsistent for two consecutive times, which was equivalent to the blindness of people and the loss of the steering wheel of the car, which worried the construction unit, so Bai Zhiyong’s team was requested to come to reinforce. After Bai Zhiyong took people to the site, he explored the construction site by analyzing the data and made a survey plan that broke the routine. He believes that the main reason for the data problem is the influence of human factors and environmental factors, and suggests that the construction party lay one side on the line about 1 meter away from the side wall of the tunnel and the other side on the center line of the tunnel; At the same time, the measurement time at the edge of the hole is adjusted from the original day to the night. After repeated measurements, the data are finally completely consistent.
Teaching with apprentices, the team continues to grow.
Bai Zhiyong attaches great importance to team learning and growth. He took the initiative to pass on his knowledge and skills to workers and college students, and also actively participated in Guo Mingyi’s love team’s "sending knowledge to the grassroots" activity, and successively entered dozens of project departments such as Xicheng Passenger Dedicated Line, Baolan Passenger Dedicated Line, Yungui Railway and Hefei Metro, with nearly 1,000 participants. In 2013, Bai Zhiyong’s skill master studio was established. Under the leadership of Bai Zhiyong, the studio improved its internal construction from the aspects of system construction, responsibility culture, learning team and team management, and actively created a new studio of "learning, knowledge, skill and innovation" modern enterprises. It plays the team role of advanced models and high-tech talents, and gradually becomes a banner for enterprises to tackle key technical problems. In recent years, we have obtained 10 national patents, 2 scientific researches, 20 provincial and ministerial papers and 10 technological methods. Since 2016, under the leadership of Bai Zhiyong, the studio has continuously strengthened the application research of drones in the field of engineering construction. Through the application research, "UAV +BIM" realizes the collision inspection between engineering structures and actual scenes, and provides spatial stereoscopic data support for project planning, site layout, sidewalk route selection, earthwork calculation, schedule control, design change and other engineering construction management. The project "UAV +BIM Technology Applied to High-speed Railway Construction Management" won the Scientific and Technological Achievement Award of Shaanxi Green Building Industry and the first prize of excellent courses, lectures and stunts (videos) of Shaanxi Workers’ Science and Technology Festival respectively, and successfully applied for two national patents, and published two papers in provincial and ministerial core journals respectively.
